CBE offical statement on marriage equality
Supreme Court extends Same-Sex Marriage Nationwide
Friday, June 26, 2015
Washington – Earlier this morning, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a ruling which declared same-sex marriage is a Constitutional Right throughout the entire United States. This landmark ruling brings to close a very important chapter towards full equality for LGBT Americans. No longer can same-sex couples be denied all the legal benefits that heterosexual couples can enjoy. The Center For Black Equity (CBE) joins millions of LGBT Americans and our allies to celebrate this important victory for human rights.
CBE understands that while this ruling is a giant step towards full equity, we also must realize that the fight for full equity of LGBT Americans is far from over. Far too many LGBTQ men and women are discriminated against every day in the work place. Too many transgender men and women are denied their basic rights in trying to obtain housing, education, hospitals and even serving in the military. Too many of our elders are forced to go back into the closet when they attempt to obtain senior services due to homophobia. Too many Black gay men are still becoming infected with HIV due to the lack of comprehensive prevention efforts.
While we have much to celebrate this LGBT Pride month, the CBE understands that this is not the end of our fight for equality; it is not the beginning of the end, but perhaps the end of the beginning. There is still much work to be done ahead of us.
