Resources for Improving LGBTQ+ Inclusivity in the Classroom

The challenges and struggles that face LGBTQ+ youth in the United States are immense. According to a 2018 report from the Human Rights Campaign:

  • 77 percent of LGBTQ+ youth received unwanted sexual comments or jokes in the past year
  • 73 percent of LGBTQ+ youth experienced verbal threats due to their perceived gender identity
  • 78 percent of youth who were not out to their parents heard members of their family make negative comments about LGBTQ+ individuals

Because of this pervasive issue, American University’s School of Education has published a detailed resource guide for LGBTQ+ communities, equality activists and those looking to share information that will create a more inclusive, equal and diverse society.
