Last week marked the start of Pride Month, the annual celebration of the LGBTQ community throughout the month of June.
Usually a time of parades, parties, and rainbow flags, Pride has taken on a more somber tone this year, as uprisings against police brutality and a global pandemic continue.
And for members of the black LGBTQ community, this moment has been a reminder of the parallels between what we’re seeing today, and the early days of the rights movement, that both are rooted in police violence.
